What Udyam registration does

Udyam is the Government of India's official registration system for micro, small and medium enterprises. The process is free, paperless and based on self-declaration, with PAN and GST-linked information used as applicable. The official portal states that registration does not require renewal.

Current MSME classification

From 1 April 2025, an enterprise is classified using both investment in plant and machinery or equipment and annual turnover. It must remain within both limits for the relevant class.

ClassificationInvestment limitTurnover limit
MicroUp to INR 2.5 croreUp to INR 10 crore
SmallUp to INR 25 croreUp to INR 100 crore
MediumUp to INR 125 croreUp to INR 500 crore

All activities of an enterprise are included under one Udyam registration. Classification can change as official investment and turnover data changes, so business records should remain current.

Information to verify before applying

  • Aadhaar details of the proprietor or the appropriate managing partner or authorised signatory.
  • PAN details of the enterprise and relevant applicant.
  • GSTIN where GST registration is applicable to the enterprise.
  • Correct legal name, constitution, address, bank and contact details.
  • Main business activity and relevant National Industrial Classification codes.
  • Employment, commencement and other enterprise information requested by the portal.

Official application process

  1. Open the official Udyam portal

Choose the new-registration route and avoid lookalike commercial domains.

  2. Authenticate Aadhaar

Use the applicant details appropriate to the enterprise constitution.

  3. Validate PAN and GST details

Complete the linked verification required for the entity, where applicable.

  4. Enter enterprise information

Review names, activities, addresses and bank details carefully before submission.

  5. Submit and retain the record

Keep the registration number and official certificate available for future updates and applications.

Benefits and practical next steps

Udyam can help an eligible enterprise access MSME-focused schemes and connected government systems. The portal highlights integrations including Government e-Marketplace, the Central Public Procurement Portal, TReDS and MSME Samadhaan.

  • Use the exact registered name consistently in banking, tender and scheme applications.
  • Review each benefit or scheme separately; Udyam registration does not automatically approve finance, tenders or incentives.
  • Use the official update facility when enterprise information changes.
  • Keep tax, banking and licence records aligned with the registration.
